Once upon a time, in the wide deep
sea there always a quarrel among the shark. It was well known as sura fish and
crocodile. The quarrel caused by food. Both had equal strenght, tactic and
greedy, and there never be a winner.
“I am bored of this quarrel,
crocodile,” said a sura.
“so am I, then what are you going
to do. So have to stop fighting?” asked crocodile.
Actually, sura al ready had a plan
to stop the quarrel.
“to stop the quarrel we have to
share the territory. I own the sea and everything in it. And you own the land
and everything on it. As for the line mark between land and sea, was the place
when the water reach the land on the high-ebb tide.”
“ok, I agree,” said crocodile.
Since that moment, the suro and
crocodile stoped fighting, and lived in peace.
One day, suro sneaked around to
look for food in the river. It made the crocodile angry. Apparently suro had
broke the rules.
“hi, crocodile how is your food on
the land?” said suro innocently.
“hi, why you broke the rule. You
have entered my territory and look for food here?”
“no, I did not ! as you can see
that this land is full of water and you know that I am the owner of the see,
and that including the river.” Argued suro.
“that is not right, the river was
belonged to me because it laid on the land !” shouted crocodile.
“then you lie to me again? If that
so, let’s fight again. The winner will be the owner of all territory!” again
crocodile shouted.
Then they started to fight after
all the time. They kept fighting so that the water change into red, caused by
their blood which come from their wouds.
The suro bit the crocodile tile on
the right side so that the tile bent into
the left. But the crocodile made, to defend, to defend it’s territory.
The suro swam back to the sea.
The quarrel between suro and
crocodile is remembered by the people of surabaya. The name surabaya has been
connected by the quarrel incident. Even now, the people make it as the symbol
of the city.
